Bolender comenzó su carrera con un pequeño papel en la película de televisión de 1986 Dallas: The Early Years. Ha sido parte de varias películas de televisión desde entonces. También hizo apariciones como invitado en programas como Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Walker, Texas Ranger, NYPD Blue, The Alias, The West Wing, y otros. Protagonizó cinco episodios de JAG entre 1995 y 1998 como Capitán Skipper Ross. Desde sus apariciones en Avatar: The Last Airbender, ha aparecido en episodios de ER y Cold Case.
